NBA stars reflect on authenticity, the value of the process and the stories behind natural diamonds

NEW YORK, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — NBA Summer League brought together the next generation of basketball talent in Las Vegas, alongside some of the game’s most recognizable names. In a conversation between two-time NBA All-Star and media entrepreneur Baron Davis and NBA player Mo Bamba, the discussion moved from basketball and diamond jewelry to a shared belief: the things that matter most cannot be rushed, manufactured or achieved by cutting corners.

NBA legends stunned in natural diamonds courtside, but there was also a message behind their jewelry.

“What you choose to wear is a representation of your personality, your brand,” said Davis, who has spent years designing custom jewelry and sourcing natural diamonds on his own terms. “Champions aren’t made in labs.”

The phrase became a starting point for a broader conversation about what it takes to become a champion, from the repetition required to compete at the highest level to the pressure and time that shape a natural diamond deep within the Earth.

“It’s hard to value things that haven’t gone through the process,” said Davis. “If you’re not trying to get to excellence, you’re never going to get there. There’s never a perfect basketball player. We’re always striving, and we’re not cutting corners.”

Bamba sees the same principle in the evolution of the game. Today’s young players may arrive with increasingly advanced skills, he said, but becoming a complete player still takes experience and years of work beyond raw ability.

“It’s crazy to see how raw talent is developing now,” said Bamba. “Kids know how to Pro Step, Euro Step, run a triple threat. It’s amazing to watch.”

For both players, jewelry’s value extends beyond appearance or price. Custom pieces capture personal milestones, while diamonds passed down become part of a family’s history.

“The flex is being able to trace your history back to where you started,” said Davis. Bamba added, “It’s in you before it’s on you.”

“Jewelry has a story,” said Davis. “If it doesn’t have a story, it’s not real.”

From the court to the jewelry box, Davis and Bamba’s conversation returned to the same idea: lasting value is built over time. Natural diamonds, like champions, are shaped by pressure, defined by their journey and carry stories no shortcut can replicate.
